API Manzanillo Imparts Course to Prevent Violence at Work

In order to create a healthy work environment that motivate healthy coexistence and generate a better service, the course "Prevention of sexual harassment, sexual abuse, discrimination and workplace violence" was made as a follow-up Program of Social Health Care 2015, last Thursday November 12th, at the facilities of API Manzanillo, Coached by Lic. Maria Elizabeth Arias Rincón.

In the dynamic of the course, was emphasized the gender violence, the trainer pointing out this kind of psychological, physical, sexual and economic aggression exerted against women or men, threatening their physical integrity, dignity and security.

Arias Rincón explained that is the woman who usually settle and develop all types of violence, so she stand up that the Colima Women Institute attends comprehensively to all who wish to visit the Institute for help to overcome crises and violence.

The speaker made reference during the course of the different types of violence, such as psychological, physical, patrimonial, economic, sexual and symbolic, that often occur in various forms: domestic, labor, educational, community, institutional and femicide.

The trainer did know the basics for both women and men, receiving the attention required when applying for support, given the importance and not leave them alone, it could be the developed circumstances at the place where violence is exerted, either by a third person or suicide, she said.

On this, she said that when a woman comes to ask for help, the Colima Institute for Women provides psychological and legal assistance, taking the emotional side of the person who comes. However she emphasized, if the situation goes beyond the security and integrity of this, we proceed to provide the legal support needed to go to the aggressor. 

However, she noted that men can also suffer violence and can go to look immediate help to the State Council for the Prevention and Treatment of Domestic Violence (CEPAVI), which also receive all the necessary support.

In continuance of the course, go into detail about various manifestations of violence, which also result in discrimination, negative reviews, beatings and verbal abuse; and in the case of workplace violence, unequal pay, unfair dismissal of pregnant women or majority, harassment and sexual harassment on women and men.

For that reason, she said that the state is marked by the Criminal Code of the State of Colima and is punished with imprisonment from six months to one year, along with a fine of fifty to eighty units and if damages are caused, it will increase 1 to 2 years in prison. Not fail to point out that if that subject was a public servant and I will use the resources or circumstances their office provides, will be dismissed and disqualified from holding a job, position or commission in the public sector, for a period of one to two years.

Other forms of harassment come from unnecessary physical contact, suggestive and nasty remarks, compromising invitations to cause discomfort, showing pornography at work, request for sexual favors, assault with the refusal to accept, gestures, comments and jokes.

Finally Arias Rincón, specified that prevention is the best tool to eliminate sexual harassment, so she advised to the employers to take steps to prevent to this happen, suggesting the approach to the Committee to go against the sexual harassment, sexual abuse, discrimination and violence, made up of the Colima Institute of Women, General Secretariat of Government, General Comptroller, Union of Employees of the state and the Secretariat of Labor and Social Prevention.
